HETA Protects the Cooling System of a Desert Refinery!

02.02.18

A gigantic refinery in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi processes the oil and gas wealth of the desert state. This, nevertheless, creates enormous amounts of processing heat that has to be dissipated. Taking into account the refinery location in Ruwais on the southern coast of the Persian Gulf, the use of seawater for cooling seemed extremely logical.

It is, however, not without its difficulties. Seawater, after all, is a product of nature that contains numerous contaminants that can severely disrupt the operation of pumps, pipelines and cooling systems. In addition, seawater is required in extremely large quantities. This places the utmost demands on the throughput capacity of the necessary filtering systems. HETA was chosen from a selection of the world's leading specialists and awarded the contract by the general contractor Samsung Engineering on behalf of the state-owned oil company. The German filtration and separation specialist was not only selected because they could supply a suitable gigantic self-cleaning automatic filtering system. They were also able to provide the enormous corrosion-proof reservoir required for the system with a glass fibre reinforced plastic structure produced in their own workshops.
